I am officially embracing fall!  I can fight the loss of summer for only so long before I give in and enjoy the fact that fall means I can wear scarves/cowls, hats and fingerless mitts, enjoy the fall colors on a hike, bake and cook all kinds of yummy pumpkin goodies, and drink Oktoberfest bier 😛

Fall also means that it gets darker earlier and it’s too cold to be out on the boat all day or out for a long ride on the road bike or motorcycle, so I have more time for knitting, reading and crocheting.  That being said, I’m definitely embracing the extra knitting time.  I am trying to bust some stash lately, and this project is actually from a previous scarf that I frogged.  The pattern was lovely, however I just didn’t like how the scarf turned out for me and wanted something a bit bigger and cozier.  I stumbled upon the hexagon stitch and just loved the way it looked, especially after swatching it on the bulky yarn.  The combination of the stitch, bulky yarn and needle size makes for a cowl that drapes nice and cozy-like and therefore can be worn different ways.  All things that make me happy!

As I was finishing up the project and wearing it, I was hoping to be inspired by some cheeky name.  Alas, the only thing that kept occurring to me while wearing it was how cozy it was so there you have it.  Not very creative, but accurate.

You will need:
~2 skeins Loops and Threads Charisma (color of choice) – Acrylic, Bulky (5)
Size 11 (8.00mm) 24″ circular needle.
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

Gauge:
10st = 4″ in hexagon stitch (height doesn’t really matter, because you can go as long as you like)

Abbreviations:
K1B: knit one below
Work #: from front to back, insert the R needle through the float, lift it onto the L needle and purl the two together.
Great tutorial by: Hexagon Stitch Converted in the Round (thank you!! made my life easy & saved me from having to convert it myself)

My finished piece is:
30″ around x 10 1/2″ high.  Important note!  One of the reasons I like how this turned out is because it does stretch or squish.  You can cast on less if you’d like a tighter cowl, just cast on in multiples of 2.

Let’s get this pattern going!

Cast on 64 stitches and join in the round, be careful not to twist.  Place that marker.

Knit round 1
Purl round 2
Knit round 3
Purl round 4 (I stopped here, but wished I had done another knit row and another purl row, just saying).

Begin Hexagon stitch for 8″ or until you reach the desired height of your cowl minus about an inch for the garter stitch edge.

Hexagon Stitch:
Rnd 1: (K1, K1B)
Rnd 2: (P1, work #)
Rnd 3: (K1B, K1)
Rnd 4: (work #, P1)

Purl a round
Knit a round
Purl a round
Bind off (I’d recommend a stretch BO)

That’s it!  Super easy pattern for those nights when you just want something to keep those hands busy and have an amusing TV show or music going on in the background.  I can attest that the pattern is easy enough to do whilst enjoying a craft bevvie 🙂

Happy knitting!  If you have any questions, let me know.

Cheers!
